Our activities in the Forest: Reading data from the dendrometer

Specialists in the ForBioSensing project during field work read the state of dendrometers - special devices permanently mounted on trees, which monitor the growth of the tree circumference without any problems. Continuous monitoring of the growth performed using 278 dendrometers placed on the 10 main species of trees occurring in the Bialowieza Forest, provides the first such data for the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest.

Dendrometers have many functions, eg they automatically measure the diameter of a tree using data from the trunk circuit, store data (they are stored in the internal memory of the device), measure the air temperature. The dendrometer can save the measurement data in the event of: power loss, when the memory capacity is exhausted, and enables the export of measurement data to the portable computer and the reproduction of the measured data after the power has been restored. The storage capacity ensures the storage of a minimum of 40,000 typical measurements. This allows you to save a set of measurement data in at least two consecutive seasons, years, at the frequency of measurement every hour. The accuracy of the measurement is not less than one micrometer.

ForBioSensing specialists daily make precise measurements during work on the project. In the pictures, we present field activities when reading data from a dendrometer in different seasons.
