ForBioSensing - information collected in the Bialowieza Forest available in the form of Meteoportal!

The ForBioSensing team has the opportunity to present you with a new design work - Meteoportal. The site was created for access to current and accurate meteorological data collected from the area of the Białowieża Primeval Forest. These data are necessary for the analyzes carried out in the project, but may also be useful for the local community. The content of the portal presents a lot of meteorological data for three forest glades in the Bialowieza Forest - near Bialowieza, Narewka and Waśki. Meteoportal is already active and available on the project website: www.forbiosensing.pl, in the tab: Mateoportal.

How it's working?

Each meteorological station is equipped with a measuring field (a meteorological garden) - a grass area of 15 × 15 m, in which meteorological instruments are installed. The set of meteorological station instruments consists of: a meteorological cage, a set of thermometers, an anemometer, rain gauges, ground thermometers, a heliograph, and instruments for measuring solar radiation. The meteorological stations located on three Bialowieza forest glades (the location of the station is: next to the Rybaki forester's lodge in Waśki, around the Browsk Forest District in Gruszkach and around the Jagiellonian Forest Education Center, cameras are mounted at Gruszkach and Jagiellonian stations - you can view photos from them), at 10-minute intervals, automatic measurement of weather parameters: air temperature at different heights: 0.5m, 2m, 5cm; soil temperature at the depth: 5cm, 20cm, 50cm; dew point temperature, air humidity at a height of 2 meters; wind direction, wind speed, maximum wind speed, instantaneous rainfall, precipitation sum, atmospheric pressure, reduced pressure, incident radiation and many more.

What practical information can we get from Meteoportal?

Meteoportal gives the opportunity to check the current weather in different regions of the Bialowieza Forest, thanks to which it makes it easier to plan the exit into the area (professionally or touristly). We can see if it is wet - because it was raining, if there is dew or if there were strong gusts of wind. The portal also informs us about astronomy data, eg about the phases of the moon, sunrise and sunset. From the measurement archive, we can read that on September 11 this year the sunrise was recorded at 5:51 and its west at 18:52. The stations are located in different regions of the Forest, so our team can combine them with the closest research areas and check whether and what meteorological conditions affect eg: current tree increments (dendrometers), renewal (taxation), tree dieback (taxation and woodworm surfaces) ).

Who can use the shared data?

The measurements are carried out automatically every 10 minutes. The results of measurements are sent to the server via the GSM network. Current data is displayed on the MetePortal and archived. This makes it a bit effort to have current access to very detailed data. Thanks to the mentioned archiving on the server, we get the history of measurements. Measurement data can be used in other project activities. And not only, archival measurement data can be made available to other entities that can use it, for example for research purposes, which will increase the knowledge base. Thanks to the creation of the Metroportal, we have quickly provided, detailed information on meteorological data, which we can use for our own needs as well as share.
We invite you to use Meteoportal!
